What is The Body Mass Index (BMI)?
The Body Mass Index is a recognised formula, which evaluates a
person’s
weight in relation to their height. It has been designed for both men
and women between the ages of 18 and 65. BMI does have limitations and
fails to consider the variable of lean body mass/muscle. It is therefore
not a suitable measure for bodybuilders, the elderly or pregnant women.
A BMI value below 20 indicates that you may be underweight, a value
between 25-30 suggests you might be overweight and a value higher
than 30 indicates obesity. A healthy BMI score is between 20 and 25.
Individuals
who are either overweight or obese, tend to have a higher chance of
developing high blood cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes,
heart disease, stroke and certain types of cancer. The BMI Index is
a simple
way of measuring the current state of your body, calculate your BMI
below. We should aim for a BMI between 20-25, if you find yours is
greater you should mention it to your GP whilst making a concerted
effort to
reduce your weight through diet and exercise.
